A desk-based assessment is normally the first step in gauging the archaeological potential of a proposed development/extraction site.

Through a review of the relevant documentary and archival sources the archaeological and heritage sensitivity of the proposed site can be assessed.

Desk-based assessments are usually requested by Local Authority planning archaeologists in order to inform upon the necessity for archaeological field investigation to confirm the presence and significance of any archaeological and heritage assets which could be affected by development.
